Turtle (Nemo) Cake

Posted by Katherine at 9:42 AM 0 comments
I was helping a friend of mine make a birthday cake for her son.
Like most of the cakes I make, I start off with one idea and then the final product is different from my original. This one for instance started off as a single turtle cake and turned into a full sea theme.

Look at those eyes, they almost look like they are looking at you.
I really like how the little turtle turned out!

I have had this idea of making a barrel cake for awhile now, so when I was making cupcakes with my kids I made these mini barrels.

I think they turned out pretty cute!

Wedding Cake

Posted by Katherine at 9:07 AM 0 comments
I did my first wedding cake last weekend. It was an out of town wedding so I baked the cake at my house and then we drove the hour and half to to the hotel we were staying in and my wonderful husband helped me decorate the cake in our hotel room after we put our kids to bed. Not my ideal situation for decorating however I was still happy with how it turned out and our family (it was a family wedding) were all happy about the cake. Most importantly the bride and groom were happy with the cake!
I also made a side slab cake for the dessert table.
I made calla lilies out of gum paste and I covered the whole cake with fondant.
One of my biggest challenges with this cake came with the decorating. The hotel room was warm and I had a really hard time getting it cool enough for the fondant. Usually when decorating a cake with fondant I would have a fairly cool room to work in so that the fondant doesn't melt. In the hotel room the fondant started to melt on me, we did however manage to get the room cooler for the end of the decorating and we were able to fix most of the problems.

What do you think of my first wedding cake??

Tinkerbell Cake

Here is the cake I made for my daughters 2nd birthday. She loves Tinkerbell and was thrilled to see the cake that I made her. My husband and I were really happy with how the cake turned out and my kids thought that is was wonderful. I am still not comfortable with making characters yet so I bought the fairies from the Disney store. My daughter thinks it great to have her own fairies to play with now. One day I will attempt to make my own little characters out of fondant or gum paste, but first I want to perfect my cakes.

Valentines Day cake

Here is a cake that I made for my kids on Valentines day.
I tried a new fondant as well as a new way to write on the cake. I am still deciding if I like either of them. I still want to experiment with them some more. We also are working on our flower techniques, they turned out OK but I want to work on them a little more.
I am really enjoying the whole cake decorating and looking forward to creating some more and perfecting my skills.

Christmas Cake

Posted by Katherine at 8:29 AM 0 comments

Here is the cake I made for Christmas this year. My kids thought that it was really cool because we had snow on our cake like we have outside.
I tried a new way of making the fondant this time and I found that I wasn't able to move it as easily as the last one I used. I am still looking for the perfect recipe for fondant.
I want to try making a tier cake next.
